4 Recruitment Trends to Follow in 2026

4 Recruitment Trends to Follow in 2026

Hiring advice has a short shelf life. The trends that mattered in 2019 — employer branding videos, VR interviews — are either standard practice now or forgotten entirely. Here’s what’s actually shaping recruiting this year.

1. AI does the first sort, humans make the call

AI screening is no longer experimental — it’s in the applicant tracking systems most companies already use, ranking resumes, scheduling interviews, even running first-round chats. Used well, it clears the backlog so recruiters spend their time on real conversations instead of resume triage.

Used badly, it’s a liability. Automated filters reject qualified candidates for keyword gaps, and a growing number of states now require bias audits and candidate disclosure when AI plays a role in hiring decisions. The trend isn’t “let AI hire for you.” It’s AI handling volume while experienced recruiters handle judgment — especially in skilled trades, where no algorithm can tell whether someone can actually run a dehu setup or scope a water loss.

2. Skills-based hiring beats credential-based hiring

More employers are dropping degree requirements and rigid years-of-experience filters in favor of one question: can this person do the job? In restoration, this trend is overdue. An IICRC-certified tech with three years of live-loss experience is worth more than a resume with the right keywords and no field time.

Practically, this means job postings that describe the actual work, interview processes with real skills assessments, and hiring managers willing to look past a non-traditional background. The companies that figure out how to evaluate capability — not pedigree — get first pick of a bigger talent pool.

3. Pay transparency is the price of admission

Posting the salary range used to be a differentiator. In 2026, in more than a dozen states, it’s the law — and everywhere else, it’s the expectation. Candidates, especially younger ones, assume a posting without pay information is hiding something. They’re usually right.

The employers adapting well aren’t just complying with the letter of state laws; they’re using transparency as a recruiting tool. A clear range, honestly set, filters out mismatches early and signals that you respect people’s time. The ones still posting “competitive salary” are wondering why their applicant quality dropped.

4. Speed is the whole game

The best candidates are off the market in days, not weeks. That was true in 2019 and it’s true now — the difference is that employers have fewer excuses. Scheduling tools, video interviews, and AI-assisted screening have removed most of the legitimate reasons a hiring process takes a month.

Audit your process honestly: how many days from application to offer? Every handoff, every “let’s circle back next week,” is a window for a competitor. The companies winning talent in 2026 aren’t necessarily paying the most — they’re deciding the fastest.
